On June 24, 2024, Minister Geoffrey Wever of Economic Affairs, Communication, and Sustainable Development led an Aruban delegation on a successful trade mission to Suriname. The delegation, including key economic leaders, met with Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi, Minister of Economy, Enterprise, and Innovation Rishma Kuldipsingh, the Minister of Transport, Communication and Tourism Uraiqit Ramsaran, and the Dutch Ambassador to Suriname, Walter Oostelbos. The delegation included the Director of the Department of Economic Affairs, Commerce and Industry of Aruba, Maria Dijkhoff-Pita, the President of the Aruba Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Diederik Kemmerling, and the Director of Aruba Trade & Industry Association, Herrick Henriquez.

The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in agriculture, tourism, and logistics. Notably, the meetings explored the potential for collaborative agricultural investments, with Suriname offering agricultural land for Aruban projects. This initiative aims to support food security and stimulate technological innovation in Aruba’s agricultural sector.

Minister Wever also engaged with Ernst & Young Suriname and local logistics companies to understand the fiscal landscape and improve cargo transport efficiency between the two nations. These efforts are set to facilitate smoother trade operations and foster strong economic ties.

The trade mission underscored Aruba’s commitment to forging strong regional partnerships and creating attractive investment opportunities. Minister Wever highlighted the positive and productive nature of the meetings, which align closely with Aruba’s economic interests.
